I spoke to Mrs. Rice-Ogletree about her role as a mentor and asked her a few questions:

TB: What are 3 reasons why women suffer from low self-esteem?
KO 1..Root cause of issues stemming from childhood.
2.Comparing themselves to others who they perceive to be better than them.
3.Negative self-talk

TB: Often times women are mistreated and stay in unhealthy, or abuse relationships because they have low self-esteem. What are some ways women can combat low self-esteem and stay away from unhealthy relationships?
KO:Place a higher value on yourself. If you believe you deserve better you will demand and attract better. At the beginning of a relationship pay attention to the red flags and trust your gut instinct over your emotions. Rarely does bad behavior improve with longevity.

TB Some women ‘s low-self-esteem spills over to their job or business. Give an example situation and a solution to this issue.
KO: Women tend to bring their personal issues into the workplace. I remember a woman in the office going through a horrible divorce. Every time her husband would call or send her an e-mail she would start cursing and crying, and it would take a while for the people around her to calm her down. Eventually she was perceived as unstable. Everyone knew her business and it was having a negative effect of her day-to-day job performance. I would suggest if you are having a difficult situation that is hard to separate from in the workplace, you find one trusted person, such as a friend or a mentor, to confide in. If you are upset, temporarily remove yourself from your work space and get yourself together. Never involve your entire office in your personal life.

TB: What are some tips for self-esteem building for women:
KO:1. Write down a list of your past successes. Sometimes we forget the amazing things we’ve already accomplished. This list will provide a reference point when you start to second guess your brilliance.
2. Stop focusing on the negative. Pay attention to what you do well and do more of it.
3. Map out your path to success. When you are focused on a goal you are less likely to be focused on the negative.
4. Volunteer – helping someone else is a great way to boost your self-esteem. It takes the focus off of you, yet allows you to use your strengths for a greater cause.

TB: What are some tips on building self-esteem for young girls that women can share with their daughters?
KO: 1. The best thing a woman can do for her daughter is to be healthy herself (spiritually, relational, financially, and physically)
2. Model good self-care and positive behaviors.
3. Don’t ever negatively criticize them
4. Don’t compare one child to another
