Prayer. Where would my life be without it? How could I live without communing with my Father in Heaven?
For me, prayer is simple. Sometimes, there are a lot of words. Sometimes only one–“Help!” Sometimes there are no words, just tears.
There is a deep longing in any child of God to pray. Our souls long for that place of rest, of knowing that God is listening. Prayer is that assurance.
When I was a child, I accepted Jesus into my heart. As I grew, I was led astray, but yet I prayed. Even when I was a drug addict, strung out on crack cocaine, I prayed. Our actions does not cause God’s ear to go deaf. When my drug use was coming to an end, as the enemy of my soul had me contemplating suicide, I prayed. Through those first few months of staying clean, yet wanting to get high everyday…I prayed. The blessing of prayer is, not only can we speak our heart, He speaks to our hearts. My prayers were heard and they were answered.
Now, twenty-two years later, I thank Him for hearing that prayer, and He has proved Himself faithful.
It is written in the Bible, in Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”
One of the blessings of having a prayer life is guidance. The guidance of the Lord is invaluable. His direction leads to life. All throughout the day, I need direction. I need my thoughts to be clear. I pray.
Another blessing of having a prayer life is gaining wisdom. I have lived without asking God for His wisdom and it cost me dearly. I am so glad I never have to be without it again. I ask Him for wisdom when I pray.
The other benefits I enjoy are peace and strength to live from day to day. When I get tired physically, spiritually or emotionally, I pray and He gives me the refreshing that I so need.
My God-confidence is built in prayer. Without Him I am nothing, but I can do all things through Him because He strengthens me.
Prayer is not something mysterious. There is no written formula that fits every individual. It is not scripted. Prayer is a simple conversation we have with our Father, our Creator God, from our hearts to His.
