“It is up to us to live up to the legacy that was left for us, and to leave a legacy that is worthy of our children and of future generations.”
Christine Gregoire

It is easy to become complacent in life. When we are complacent we are hesitant to reach and stretch beyond the limits of our own imagination. I will be honest and tell you that at some points I have been complacent too. One question changed all of that for me.

While attending a personal leadership and self development seminar the attendees were asked, what would you do if you had 6 months to live? That question brought forward to me thoughts of not only me, after all, based on this question in 6 months I would be gone. The thought that really rang in my head was, “What legacy will I leave behind.”

The mother in me thought, “What legacy will I leave for the next generation? For my children?” The woman in me thought “What legacy will I leave behind for ME?” I had no suitable answer for either question and that forced me into action!

Because I was propelled forward by my need to create a legacy for my children and to have my life represented the way I wanted to when I was no longer in this world, I was able to shake off complacency and procrastination and move towards ideas and actions. Thoughts of what would be carved on my tombstone and how the next generation would be propelled forward as a result of my actions helped me to move past the fear daily and continue to build a legacy worth leaving behind.

We are all very human, and for the most part afraid of death. However, being human, we are even more afraid of what others will say about us behind our backs; even if we are no longer here.

So this is my word to you. Take the steps you need NOW to build the legacy that speaks to how much you care, how hard you work, and how much you value the success of the next generation. Do not allow fear and procrastination to hold you inactive. Think of the things that you would accomplish if you only had 6 months to live and work to do them NOW. Time on this earth is not promised or guaranteed. Act accordingly.

When it is all said and done answer the question for your self. What legacy will I leave behind? If the answer is no legacy, then get to work building YOUR DREAM today. That is the least that we owe this next generation, the legacy of their ancestors.

“I’m trying to build a strong business. I want to create new stars, new shows and new products for my audience and create a legacy that outlives me. There are so many other ways I want to reach women besides doing a talk show.”

  2. Many coaching courses mainly focus on simply changing behaviors and goal-setting (both important as part of coaching), but we believe coaching should create transformational change at the level of beliefs, values, perspective and purpose. What do you think??
