“Music is my first Love. However, as I mature, acting has become a very close second. I do Love combining both in theater. This is how I see the balance.
I look forward to doing more films and television and will make music until
I leave the planet.”

What was your experience working with Tyler Perry and the cast of the stage play Diary of a MAD BLACK WOMAN?

It was groundbreaking for me. My first theater experience. I enjoyed the multi-faceted role that I played. I loved creating impromptu comedy for my role, which was more dramatic. I most enjoyed the interactions with the audience.

You have been in the entertainment industry for over three decades. What advice would you give to aspiring artists just starting out?

Determine that this is a “gift” that you are passionate about. Make a documented plan of action. Who will compose and produce, where do you plan to get exposure, who will represent or partner with you, etc..

Tell us about your upcoming music projects.

Well I released my Dance music single, “I don’t Know Why,” that charted #1 & was in the top 10 for 6 weeks on Traxsource charts amidst thousands of new weekly releases.written by the Amazing  DJ Sandy Rivera and me. I’m also working on final touches of an R&B/Soul project with Platinum writer/producer Leon Sylvers & Chimezirim Adighibe, a new Nigerian Afrobeats writer/production sensation. Early 2024 release that debuts live NYE in LA.!

You have been praised for your powerful and soulful voice. How do you maintain your vocal health and technique?

I eat all organic greens, veggies, fruits, grain-free meats, exercise weekly for strength & stamina, herbs & herbal supplements, Peace, and Rest as much as possible. None of this works without God blessing my efforts, so most importantly, I stay in touch with the one who gifted me.

Your music often incorporates themes of Love, empowerment, and spirituality. How do these themes influence your creative process?

I dream of many songs that I write. I call them my “Music Angels,” who whisper songs to me, usually in the middle of the night. I sometimes get lyric & title ideas from life experiences and surroundings. Women have had a tough journey in this and many businesses. Words of empowerment are crucial for me since I’ve lived this journey and have much to share. I am strong on spirituality, so going forward, I will continue to focus on positive and Love-based creations.

You are also a songwriter and producer. What is your songwriting process like, and how do you decide which songs to produce?

Yes. I developed this skill out of necessity to get to the final product. Whatever song I’ve written or co-written and makes the cut to record by me is typically produced by me whole or in part with my amazing music associates. I choose songs to produce based on how impactful the vibe, lyrics or beats stick in my soul & head.

You have toured extensively throughout your career. What has been your most memorable performance or tour experience, and why?

The most memorable tour has to be with Prince. That’s when I truly became a live performer. I so appreciate the features & duets with Prince also. So many megastars graced the stage with us, and I got to play percussions to boot!

You have collaborated with many artists over the years. Is there anyone you would like to collaborate with in the future that you haven’t had the chance to work with yet?

I love listening to “Gutter Free” Music (Gospel channel), Afro Beats, R&B, Reggae, and Jazz. God willing, my next music project will be “New Age” Gospel-based. I would love to collaborate with some of the Artists I hear there. So much great and empowering music! I would love to do a duet with my friend Charlie Wilson, Yolanda Adams, or any Clark Sisters. I would love to collaborate with writer/producer/ artist H.E.R. and my Diamond Award status writer/producer son Darius “Phonix.” Barnes on some R&B.
