A visionary leader redefining compassionate care through faith, innovation, and purpose.
Shilda Frost-Labule has dedicated her life to transforming the standard of care for medically fragile children and adults. What began as a calling rooted in faith has evolved into a groundbreaking model of compassion, advocacy, and innovation—impacting countless lives and reshaping what healthcare can look like for society’s most vulnerable.
Her journey is not simply one of leadership—it is one of purpose, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to dignity and love.
A Calling That Sparked a Movement
Shilda’s path began at just 19 years old when she served as a missionary in Haiti, South America, and Africa. These early experiences deeply shaped her perspective, strengthening her commitment to serve with compassion and advocate for those in need.
What she witnessed during that time ignited a lifelong mission—one that would later become a powerful force for change in healthcare.
Building a New Model of Care
In 1998, Shilda founded Second Family, Inc., with a bold and compassionate vision: To create homes—not institutions—for medically fragile children.
Starting with one home and three children requiring complex medical care, she challenged a system that often limited these individuals to hospitals or institutional settings. Instead, she created environments where they could live with dignity, stability, and love—while receiving 24-hour skilled nursing care.
Today, Second Family has grown into a network of 21 residential homes across multiple campuses, serving individuals with some of the most complex medical needs.
Through this work, Shilda and her team have not only changed lives—they have redefined what community-based care can truly look like.
“Every child, no matter how medically fragile, deserves a home, a family, and the dignity of being loved.”
— Shilda Frost-Labule
