Senator Genevieve Whitaker, who served as a Senator & Legislative Secretary in the 34th Legislature of the Virgin Islands (U.S.), is a 2016 Fellow for the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent, having served as a representative advocating for the rights of fellow Virgin Islanders at the United Nations forums is delighted to be part of this series among amazing women.
My Chapter, “The Woman Behind the Politics”: Fueling the Fire Within & Challenging the Status Quo, highlights my upbringing, being raised in the loving home of my grandmother, Genevieve Browne; I share my journey of educational pursuits, achievements, and personal and career development, which led to me into politics, fueled by passion and interests sourced from my childhood—a nod to my future.
What inspired you to write this story and contribute to the book?
Women’s contributions to our society are often overlooked; this encouraged me to write a story of my journey to change that narrative. Thank you to my Godsister Zahra Spencer, Jo’Hanna Samuel, and Vanessa Farrell for inspiring me.
