We caught up with this busy mother of one toddler for this interview. We asked her to describe herself at the core.
DF: I have an opportunity to help someone improve the quality and longevity of their life. I love empowering and helping people. It’s an incredible feeling to truly make a difference in another person’s life. I compete with my old and current self. I am closer to God because of my trials, and my faith has increased so much because I have learned to operate in obedience. For the past two years of my life, my work is aligned with exactly who I am.
CW: Tell us about your journey to become a fitness guru
DF: In 2010, I went for my annual wellness check. A lump was found in my left breast. A mammogram revealed a spot. A biopsy revealed it was benign. A few weeks later, I found I was four weeks pregnant with twins. At nine weeks, I suffered a miscarriage and had a DNC. I suffered severe bloating, produced minimal urination and almost non-existent bowel movements for weeks. I fell into a depression and had unhealthy eating habits and excessive alcohol consumption. I had been bleeding internally for nearly two months. This finding resulted in a colonoscopy; three polyps were found along with something that was left inside of me from the DNC procedure that was cutting off the blood supply to my colon. The doctor told me I had the colon of a 55-year-old man. Thankfully, the results were benign. I reflected on my choices and how I contributed to the pain that I suffered. I realized while the miscarriage and mismanaged DNC procedure was out of my control, my poor choices in taking care of my body were within my power. I vowed to be and live healthier once I was well. I haven’t looked back.
CW: What issues have you had to overcome that you now implement into your programs?
DF: In the past, I had a habit of drinking a lot of juice or iced tea. I rarely drank water. I was dehydrated all of the time without realizing it. When you are not drinking enough water, you feel more lazy and lethargic. I have a 30-day water challenge for my clients to challenge themselves to drink 1 gallon of water a day. Some clients do not make the full gallon daily, but even if they are consuming at least half the gallon, it is enough.
CW: Why is it important to you to assist women to achieve their health and fitness goals?
DF: Women are wives, mothers, career and businesswomen. We live extremely busy lives. We are also nurturers. We put everyone else before ourselves. I want to teach women that they can have it all. You can take care of you FIRST and nurture those around you. You must practice self-care, and then you can take care of others.
CW: What are some of the myths that you hear women speak about in regard to health and fitness?
DF: One of the biggest myths is believing lifting weights will make you look like a man. It takes a LOT of effort to look like a man. Lifting weights helps boost your metabolism, tighten your skin, and build lean muscle.
CW: In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, what are some of the ways you are using your brand DF: to raise awareness?
I will be on WIAN radio twice this month. I will be honoring some women who are breast cancer survivors. On October 15, I will have 2-3 women on the radio with me to share their personal journey of beating the disease. I will also have a video circulating throughout the month of October, where women will share 1-2 minutes of their story. Each day this month, I will give a shout-out and honor a woman who has beat the disease.
CW: In fitness, sometimes we need inspiration and motivation. What inspired you to commit to better health and fitness?
DF: My poor health at the time I started my journey is what motivated me to get started. Now, it’s the small victories of having more energy, clearer and tighter skin, looking and feeling better than I did when I was in my 20s. Going for my annual physical and receiving a good report is always a huge motivator for me.
CW: Staying on course for eating better and exercising is not easy for most. What are three ways you help your clients stay motivated and consistent?
- The first step is having them ask themselves why they want the change. When you identify and understand your WHY, you sometimes have to go back to those reasons to keep going.
- Write 30-60-90 day goals. It can be to lose 10 lbs. Recently, I had a client come to me who wanted to have her high cholesterol and high blood pressure under control before her 40th birthday.
- I am a hands-on coach. My clients have the flexibility to reach out to me via email or chat when they are struggling to get adjusted. We discuss their day and figure out where, when, and what is throwing them off course.
CW: Metabolism plays a major role in weight loss and management. What are three tips to help get your metabolism on point?
DF:
- Be consistent. The results will not come unless you are consistent and that rings true with your metabolism.
- Be hydrated. Drinking more water helps speed the metabolism and burn fat.
- Drink green or white tea. Green tea contains caffeine and EGCG. Both promote fat loss and help speed the metabolism.
CW: You hear so much about vitamins and which ones to take. What are your recommended vitamins for optimal health for women and why?
DF: With this being breast cancer awareness month, I have to mention the importance of a multi vitamin having a component of reducing free radicals in the body. We are exposed to free radicals through the sun, air, water pollution, and even pesticides. I have a strong recommendation for my clients to take the peak performance vitamins. They reduce free radicals in the body. The peak performance vitamins is up to 85% soluble and is up to 10 times more available in the body for absorption. This is HUGE! All multi vitamins are not equal.
CW: What is your definition of a courageous woman?
DF: A courageous woman may be afraid, but despite her fears, she has faith and weathers the storm until she WINS. She is a relentless, resilient warrior. She fights for a better life all while maintaining her grace and class.
