Co-author, In Pursuit of Fearless Living: Pivoting from Life’s Uncertainties
I am Marcia Hylton, and I live in Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK.
The one word I would use to describe myself is intentional. I say this because no matter the challenge, disappointment, and pain, I have had to intentionally change my narrative in the circumstance and keep moving forward, not just for myself but for my children. Like childbirth, pushing past the pain, there is joy and freedom from pain on the other side. My children were and continue to be my driving force, intentionally leaving a legacy of freedom in all its expressions.
My biggest life lesson was believing the lie that I had nothing meaningful to say or anything of value to contribute to life. Consequently, I diminished myself, never truly stepping into the fullness of who I am as a woman, and subsequently spent most of my adult life people pleasing and being confused about who I was and what my values were. The biggest lesson I learned from all this was that I needed to heal. I did not choose to be a victim of abuse, but I understood I was responsible for healing from it. Ultimately, I may not be the same person, but I could choose to use those experiences to be better. It meant setting my gold standards for my own life. This included learning to say no, asking for what I needed, showing up authentically for me, and being comfortable with that, even when others around me were not.
Five years from now, I have contributed to the transformation of thousands of women’s lives globally through my work, policy change, and influence that promotes and elevates equity for women in all contexts of their lives. I will have more time to spend with my family and my five grandchildren, to travel, speak on big stages, share my story, and just live and enjoy my best life.
This is the reason for contributing to this anthology. I did not wait until I felt good enough to know enough. I wanted to share a little of my journey with the other powerhouse women who are so inspiring, so other women can understand that if I can do it, so can they. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be a part of such an amazing project, especially in my 60th year-this is so special for me. I want women like me to know that anything the mind can conceive is possible, that change is doable and that they deserve the best life has to give, no matter their age. My granddaughter has a role model of what it is to be a woman who values herself. And can do what she loves to do. We can be free to be who we were created to be despite our experiences. We change and grow through our pain. This is what keeps me focused on my goals.
The one key takeaway from my chapter that I want for the readers is that after the storm, they will never be the same again, but better. Three words to describe my chapter are relatable, hopeful, and insightful.
