How the New York Times Bestselling Author Is Using Storytelling to Inspire Generations
By Dr. Telishia Berry
For more than 35 years, Omar Tyree has inspired generations through stories that entertain, educate, and leave a lasting impact.
With more than 30 books to his credit, an NAACP Image Award, and a career spanning writing, journalism, and publishing, the Howard University graduate has established himself as one of the most respected voices in contemporary African American literature. Yet beyond the accolades and accomplishments, one concern continues to fuel his mission:
The lack of reading in the African American male community.
For Tyree, literacy is more than an issue of reading books. It is connected to education, knowledge, opportunity, and the ability to make informed decisions. Throughout his career, he has used his writing, speaking engagements, journalism, and educational initiatives to encourage readers to embrace knowledge and lifelong learning.
His influence has also extended beyond the bookshelf. Tyree has spoken at more than 80 colleges and universities, sharing his experiences and perspective with students and audiences across the country.
“Literacy, education, and the promotion of wisdom have been my career for the past 35 years to uplift the community,” he says.
But Tyree’s creative vision has never been limited to the written word. His work continues to evolve across multiple forms of storytelling, including film, television, music, educational programming, and live events.
Most recently, he has returned to another longtime passion: sports. His newest novel, Touchdown in Brazil, takes readers into the international world of professional football, blending sports, culture, and storytelling while opening another chapter in his expansive creative career.
Behind his longevity is a personal story of discipline and perseverance. Tyree says being raised by a strict stepfather played an important role in shaping his character. Those early experiences helped develop the determination he would later need to navigate publishing, entrepreneurship, and an ever-changing entertainment industry.
When asked to identify the single accomplishment of which he is most proud, Tyree finds it difficult to choose just one.
“I’ve done a lot, so I can’t specify one big thing,” he says.
Perhaps that is fitting. His legacy cannot be reduced to one bestseller, award, speaking engagement, or career milestone. It is reflected in more than three decades of creating, educating, and encouraging others to recognize the power of knowledge.
His definition of a Courageous Man captures the same determination that has carried him throughout his career:
“A man who moves forward despite his fear!”
And moving forward is exactly what Omar Tyree continues to do.
Whether developing his next book, exploring opportunities in film and television, expanding his work in sports, or encouraging another generation to become readers, Tyree remains committed to using his platform to educate, inspire, and create opportunities.
After more than 35 years, Omar Tyree is not simply looking back at the literary legacy he has built.
He is still writing it.
