“Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced.” — James Baldwin
The wounds we don’t talk about are often the ones that hurt the most. One of the deepest, most unspoken sources of emotional pain for women—especially Black women—is the Mother-Daughter Wound. This week on Courageous Woman Magazine Live, Reverend Dr. LaTonia Taylor is joining us to break the silence.
We’ll explore how unhealed pain between mothers and daughters affects how we show up in our lives—from our confidence to our careers, our relationships, and even how we parent our own children.
What Is the Mother Wound?
According to Reverend Dr. LaTonia Taylor, the Mother Wound is “that gap between what you needed from your mother and what you got.” It’s the emotional residue of unmet needs, unspoken truths, and generational trauma that gets passed down, especially in families where silence was considered strength.
“In our patriarchal, male-dominated culture, women are conditioned to think of themselves as ‘less-than.’ That belief is passed down—often unconsciously—from mother to daughter, generation after generation.”
While many of us were taught to “let the past be the past,” Dr. Taylor makes it clear: we don’t escape the past — we carry it. And until it’s faced, it continues to affect every part of our lives.
Why It’s Taboo to Talk About
Culturally, there’s pressure to protect the image of the self-sacrificing mother. Women are often shamed into silence with phrases like:
“Look at all your mother did for you.”
“You’d be selfish to do what she couldn’t do.”
“You owe her your loyalty.”
These narratives create guilt and emotional debt that keep us from honoring our own stories, and ultimately, from healing.
Healing Isn’t About Blame
This isn’t a finger-pointing session. It’s about understanding the bigger system — the racism, patriarchy, and economic struggles that have shaped generations of Black mothers and daughters.
“Healing the Mother Wound isn’t about blame. It’s about understanding, compassion, and growth,” says Dr. Taylor. “We must speak the unspoken to heal and become whole.”
