We spoke to Dr. Dawn Sheree about balancing her roles as a mom and therapist.

Can you share how your journey as a mother has influenced your approach to mental health advocacy and treatment? How do you balance your professional responsibilities with motherhood?

Becoming a mother and managing the dual demands of work and home as a CEO in the mental health field has profoundly shaped my perspective and approach to mental health advocacy. It’s taught me patience, empathy, and the importance of nurturing physical and psychological well-being. This has translated into a more compassionate approach in my work, considering the full context of an individual’s life, including familial relationships. Being present and effective during work hours ensures quality time for my family afterward. Integrating mindfulness and self-care into my daily routine supports my mental resilience, effectively helping me manage career and home life challenges.

As a board-certified mental health specialist and a single mother yourself, what advice do you have for mothers struggling to prioritize self-care amidst their parenting duties?

  1. Utilize Quiet Times: Take advantage of moments like your children’s naptime or bedtime for self-care or to catch up on tasks.
  2. Incorporate Self-Care Daily: Blend self-care into your routine, such as listening to a podcast at the park with your kids or practicing deep breathing.
  3. Set Achievable Goals: Focus on small, manageable self-care actions, like practicing mindfulness for a few minutes or ensuring you sleep enough.
  4. Seek Support: Build a network of family, friends, or community resources to help create space for your self-care.
  5. Prioritize Effective Activities: Choose self-care activities that offer significant rejuvenation, like exercise or engaging in hobbies that uplift your mood and energy.

By smartly using quiet moments for self-care and support, single mothers can maintain balance and show their children the importance of mental health and well-being.

Balancing motherhood can be challenging. How do you help mothers identify personalized self-care practices that align with their values and fit into their busy schedules?

  1. Find Time in the Routines: Nap times or quiet evenings after bedtime can be perfect for catching up on self-care or essential tasks, making the most of those quiet moments we already have in our day.
  2. Blend Self-Care with Daily Life: Instead of carving out new routines, why not add a little self-care to what you already do, such as walking to the park with the kids while listening to your favorite podcast?
  3. Lean on Your Community: Building a support network can be a game-changer.

Could you share insights into your approach to trauma reduction and healing, particularly for mothers who may have experienced trauma while balancing motherhood?

For mothers navigating personal trauma, it’s vital to acknowledge your feelings without judgment and create a support network that includes therapy or counseling. Simple self-care practices, like journaling or short walks, can build resilience and a sense of peace.

Your research on health disparities affecting premenopausal Black women is significant. How has motherhood influenced your perspective on addressing these disparities to benefit mothers and families?

My research on health disparities affecting premenopausal Black women, particularly in the context of behavioral science, has been deeply influenced by my experiences as a mother. This dual perspective has enriched my understanding of mothers’ and families’ multifaceted challenges in navigating similar health concerns, especially when targeting an understanding of trauma from the lens of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES).

In my work, including various roles from CEO of Tranquil Solutions for a Centered Mind LLC to public speaking engagements, I emphasize the critical importance of accessible and compassionate healthcare. I advocate for policies and practices that address the medical aspects of these disparities and consider the psychological and social dimensions. Creating environments where mothers feel supported and empowered to seek care without stigma or barriers is crucial.

Moreover, motherhood has taught me the importance of vulnerability and open dialogue.

In my presentations, I often share personal dilemmas to encourage other women to embrace their challenges rather than hide them. This approach fosters a more inclusive conversation about health and well-being, encouraging mothers to prioritize their health as a model for their families. By advocating for holistic, informed, and empathetic healthcare practices, I aim to influence positive changes that benefit mothers and their families, ensuring they receive the care and support they deserve.
