There Is Bravery In Vulnerability

Mildred J Mills is a retired IT executive and author of Daddy’s House: A Daughter’s Memoir of Setbacks, Triumphs & Rising Above Her Roots. She speaks authoritatively about her life experiences, rising from the cotton fields in rural Alabama to an IT executive in corporate America and beyond by taking responsibility for her actions, extracting positive and negative lessons from her parents, and using setbacks as stepping-stones.

The most impactful speakers can shed the cloak of fear and bravely wade into the most vulnerable parts of their stories to help others heal.

My Inspiration
I was inspired to become a speaker after witnessing domestic violence in the home and surviving sexual assault. Fear of retribution is a significant factor preventing others from speaking out. Yet, I chose to speak for the voiceless and, in turn, heal from my own trauma. I embarked upon my journey into the world of public speaking in a women’s shelter. I spent two years counseling women who were unable to move past horrific tales of abuse. Yet, these women tried to shield those who had broken their hearts, spirits, and limbs out of fear.

Be Relatable
Vulnerability plays a crucial role in effective communication. Speaking honestly and sharing stories of overcoming tremendous trials helps an audience relate to the speaker. If a person does not share vulnerable moments and speaks only from a lofty place, it is difficult for her message to resonate with an audience. I incorporate vulnerability into my podcast and speeches by sharing relatable stories that reveal me as a human with similar frailties as others.

My ultimate goal as a speaker is to motivate others to be brave and vulnerable enough to tell their stories, move beyond the trauma, and begin to heal.
