I encourage aspiring speakers to find their passion. Identify what truly drives them and aligns with their purpose. Know your audience by understanding who you are speaking to. Make sure you’re authentic, vulnerable and organic, providing experiences, honesty, and lessons learned. Always Embrace feedback, and most importantly, stay true to your purpose. That’s very important.
I was invited to a Womens Church Group. I was fearful to speak but was asked to tell some of my story. I prayed, asked the Lord for guidance and wisdom, and spoke. It flowed beautifully. As I looked out into the crowd, there wasn’t a dry eye in the building, I knew then, an impact was made. Afterwards, I was asked, “How are you still here?” “How are you still standing?” My simple response was, “the Lord.”
Inspiration for public speaking came from my story. I knew there was someone out there that needed to hear it. While the journey is never easy, it started with self-development, gaining skills, and seizing opportunities. There are times I still get nervous, but it is worth it.
Vulnerability plays a crucial role in effective communication as it fosters authenticity, connection, and empathy with those who are listening. When I am able to share my struggles, vulnerabilities, and personal experiences, it humanizes me, makes me more relatable to the audience. The most effective way to incorporate for me is to be organic, authentic, admit mistakes, imperfections, listen, provide support and validation. I truly want others to feel supported, to be seen, heard and understood.
My ultimate goal as a speaker is to touch at least one life. To effectively connect with and resonate with my audience, to inform, educate, and empower those who find themselves in situations like mine, to have the courage for change in their life.
