In honor of Juneteenth, Courageous Woman Magazine highlights Shannon Martin, the visionary owner of The GuudSeed Company in Riverside, CA.

Combining her expertise as a Nurse and Certified Holistic Trichologist, Martin has created a holistic salon and wellness center specializing in hair restoration and natural hair care. Driven by the desire to help a friend battling cancer, her journey as an African American woman entrepreneur has been both challenging and insightful. Through The GuudSeed Company, Martin is committed to empowering the African American community with personalized, holistic solutions for optimal hair health and wellness, while also offering education on natural hair restoration and diet.

We caught up with this busy mom and entrepreneur to discuss her journey as a business owner.

What inspired you to start your business, and how has your journey been as an African American woman entrepreneur?

I was inspired to start The GuudSeed Company to help a friend fighting cancer and my journey has been the most insightful journey.

How does your business impact and support the African American community, and what initiatives are you most proud of?

The GuudSeed Company is dedicated to the African American community. We offer a range of products, services, and classes that aim to educate and empower our community about natural hair restoration and reducing hair loss through diet.

What challenges have you faced in your entrepreneurial journey, and how have you overcome them?

I have experienced a lack of support from others close to me, financial hardship, and the loss of a loved one. However, I have kept believing that what I had to offer in the business would eventually attract the right customers.

What advice would you give to other African American women who are aspiring to start a business?

“Just do it, start small, and stay inspired if nobody else believes in your business, you stay self-inspired and keep the faith above all else.”

If there was one thing you could change in regard to your entrepreneurship Journey, what would it be?

I would have started earlier and learned how to do digital marketing when i was younger.

What do you like most about being an entrepreneur?

Being an entrepreneur allows me to work hard for what I believe in and what I’m passionate about: education and teaching others to heal themselves naturally. I also love the freedom of planning my days and being intentional about my time.
