Actor, Author, Producer, and Creator of The Velvet Lounge on Faith, Opportunity, and Building Cultural Legacy

A Wake-Up Call That Changed Everything

Sometimes the moments that seem like setbacks become the very things that prepare us for our greatest opportunities.

For actor, producer, author, and entrepreneur Ben Stephens, that moment came in the form of a mini-stroke.

Today, Stephens is best known for portraying Curtis Duncan on The Family Business, the hit television series based on the novels of Carl Weber. He is also the creator and host of The Velvet Lounge with Ben Stephens, a platform dedicated to preserving the culture and music of 90s R&B. But before the success, the growing audience, and the opportunities, there was a wake-up call that changed his life.

At the time, Stephens admits he wasn’t taking his health seriously. Weighing 259 pounds, he was exercising on a stationary bike when he suddenly realized something was wrong.

“Mentally, I knew what I wanted to do, but physically, my body wasn’t responding the way it should,” he recalls.

Doctors later confirmed he had suffered a mini-stroke.

Rather than allowing the diagnosis to define him, Stephens decided it would transform him.

During a five-day hospital stay, he committed to improving his health and changing his lifestyle. After leaving the hospital, he focused on healthier eating, daily exercise, and building better habits. What he didn’t realize was that his transformation was opening doors he never expected.

When Preparation Meets Opportunity

His sister, N.D. Brown, Executive Producer of The Family Business, had been following his progress online and encouraged him to return in front of the camera after spending years producing behind the scenes. Soon afterward, Carl Weber contacted him about reading for the role of Curtis Duncan.

“The rest, as they say, is history,” Stephens says.

The role would evolve from a recurring character into a series regular and become one of the defining milestones of his career. Yet for Stephens, the experience reinforced a lesson he has carried throughout his professional journey: opportunity often appears where others see obstacles.

Finding the Gap

“I’ve never been the type of person to sit around and wait for opportunities to come to me,” he says. “I’m always looking for gaps in the marketplace, places where there’s an unmet need or a story that hasn’t been told.”

That philosophy has guided his work as an actor, producer, entrepreneur, and author. It inspired him to co-author Carl Weber Presents: Curtis Duncan – Bounty Hunter, expanding the story of a fan-favorite television character and creating new opportunities beyond the screen.

“The key is to find a gap in the market, create value, and go make it happen,” he says.

Building Community Through Culture

That same mindset led to the creation of one of his most successful ventures, The Velvet Lounge with Ben Stephens.

The idea was born while Stephens was promoting his book in Memphis. During a visit to a radio station, a friend asked what kind of show he would create if given the opportunity.

Without hesitation, Stephens replied, “A 90s R&B slow jams show.”

The answer revealed something he had already sensed. There was a passionate audience that still loved the music, memories, and culture of the 1990s, yet few platforms were intentionally serving them.

What started as a simple concept quickly evolved into a thriving community.

“The music of the 90s wasn’t just entertainment,” Stephens explains. “It was the soundtrack to first loves, family gatherings, celebrations, and important moments that people still cherish today.”

The response was immediate. During one of his early TikTok Live broadcasts, more than 17,000 viewers tuned in, confirming what he already believed. People weren’t just looking for music. They were looking for connection.

“They were looking for a community, a feeling, and a place where the culture of 90s R&B could live and thrive,” he says.

The Power of Storytelling

For Stephens, preserving culture through media and storytelling has become a mission. Whether acting, writing, producing, or hosting, he believes stories have the power to connect generations and inspire people to see new possibilities for their own lives.

“People forget facts and statistics, but they will always remember a great story and how that story made them feel,” he says.

That belief continues to fuel everything he creates.

A Legacy of Faith and Possibility

As his career continues to evolve, Stephens hopes his journey encourages others to pursue their dreams with faith and determination.

“My journey has taught me that many of the things people call impossible are only impossible until someone has the courage to believe otherwise,” he says.

When asked what defines a courageous man, his answer is simple.

“A courageous man to me is stepping out on faith and trusting God.”

It is a philosophy that has guided him from a life-changing health scare to a successful career in entertainment and media. More importantly, it is the legacy he hopes to leave behind, inspiring others to trust God, embrace opportunity, and create something meaningful that outlives them.

For Ben Stephens, success is not just about building a career. It is about building community, preserving culture, and using every story as an opportunity to make an impact.
