Born Etterlene DeBarge Jr. on March 15, 1955, in Detroit, Michigan, Bunny was raised in a deeply musical family whose passion for music would eventually captivate audiences worldwide. She spent much of her childhood between Detroit and Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she and her siblings developed their musical talents through church performances and family harmonies. Their mother, Etterlene DeBarge, a gospel singer and songwriter, played a significant role in nurturing the family’s gifts and encouraging their musical development.

Those early experiences singing in church laid the foundation for Bunny’s distinctive vocal style and lifelong connection to music. The gospel influences that shaped her childhood would later become an important part of the soulful sound that made DeBarge one of the most beloved groups of the 1980s.

The DeBarge siblings eventually formed a group and began performing locally before signing with Motown Records in the late 1970s. By the early 1980s, DeBarge had emerged as one of the most successful family groups in contemporary music, blending pop, soul, and R&B into a signature sound that appealed to audiences across generations.

While often collaborating with her brothers El, Bobby, and Mark DeBarge, Bunny was a powerful creative force behind several of the group’s most memorable songs. She wrote “A Dream,” the soulful ballad from the In a Special Way album that has become one of DeBarge’s most celebrated and frequently sampled songs. She also co-wrote “Time Will Reveal,” a major No. 1 R&B hit, along with “I Like It,” the group’s breakthrough 1982 hit, and “Stay With Me,” a fan-favorite ballad that has continued to live on through sampling and reinterpretation by later artists.

Her songwriting often explored themes of love, family, relationships, longing, and personal experience. These themes resonated with audiences because they reflected genuine emotion and vulnerability, helping establish a deep connection between the music and its listeners.

Bunny’s influence also extended beyond DeBarge. During her solo career, including her 1987 Motown album In Love, she contributed to songs such as “Let’s Spend the Night,” “I Still Believe,” “A Woman in Love,” and “Saving Up (All My Love).” These works allowed her to express her own voice as an artist and songwriter while continuing to build on the musical foundation that made her work with DeBarge so impactful.

Her songwriting legacy has also reached new generations through sampling. Bunny’s original compositions have been connected to songs by major artists, including Ashanti’s “Foolish,” which samples “Stay With Me,” 2Pac’s “I Ain’t Mad At Cha,” which samples “A Dream,” Mariah Carey’s “I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time,” which samples “Stay With Me,” and Blackstreet’s “Don’t Leave Me,” which samples “A Dream.” These continued references show how deeply Bunny’s work remains woven into the sound of contemporary R&B, hip-hop, and pop music.

Like many artists who experience extraordinary success, Bunny’s journey has also included significant personal challenges. The DeBarge family faced financial difficulties, internal struggles, and the pressures that often accompany fame. Bunny has openly discussed her own battles with addiction and the hardships she endured during various periods of her life.

Rather than allowing those experiences to define her, she has become a powerful example of resilience and recovery. Through honesty, faith, and perseverance, she has continued to share her story while inspiring others who may be facing their own challenges.

In recent years, Bunny has continued to perform and pursue music independently while sharing her personal testimony with audiences around the country. Her willingness to speak openly about both her successes and struggles has earned her admiration not only as an artist but also as a woman of strength and authenticity.

As the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame welcomes Bunny DeBarge into its distinguished Class of 2026, the honor recognizes far more than a collection of hit songs. It celebrates a songwriter, vocalist, and pioneer whose work helped define an era of R&B while inspiring generations of artists who followed.

Bunny DeBarge’s legacy is one of talent, perseverance, honesty, and enduring influence. Her music continues to touch hearts around the world, while her personal journey serves as a reminder that true greatness is often measured not only by success, but by the courage to overcome adversity and keep moving forward.

Bunny DeBarge will be officially inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame during the 6th Annual Women Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on June 13, 2026, at the Katzen Arts Center at American University in Washington, D.C.
